Michael Taylor

“I was taken away from my long-time foster parent at 8 years old in 1998. Her name was Bernice Taylor, and we coincidentally had the same last name. For years, I believed she was my biological mother... then, in 2011 she passed away from Alzheimer's, and I found out the truth.

In my worst days of foster care, my experiences taught me that YOU have to care enough about YOU to help YOU. You always hear about how messed up foster care is or how discombobulated foster children's lives are. But, for me, it was a blessing in disguise. Because if it weren't for foster care, I would have grown up in project housing with little to no resources… without hope. Being in foster care allowed me to attend school, have three square meals, and a warm home to live in.

The one piece of advice I can give to my fellow foster sisters and brothers is to find what it is that makes you happy and go for it! Pursue your passion. It is never too early to know what you want to do with your life. Create a plan for yourself as early as possible...or welcome to the beautiful struggle.”
