Dr. Keating / Being Fearless

Dr. Keating recounts a pivotal challenge in her foster care journey where she remained resolute, seeking guidance from teachers and friends as she crafted her narrative "from foster to PhD."

Navigating the foster care system, she faced a cruel reality with a case worker who was not only rude but went so far as to mock and threaten her. "He told me he would make my life a living hell because he could." The separation from her siblings compounded the difficulty, making it hard for her to focus on anything but their well-being.

Reflecting on her experience, she shed light on the constant disruptions and new placements that marked her foster care journey. The fear of making mistakes loomed large, as her case worker made it clear that any misstep could result in being moved yet again. Amidst the challenges, she articulates the need for better support from foster parents.

"I would have loved more time to adjust,"

she says, expressing the overwhelming experience of being bombarded with rules and restrictions from the very beginning.

In the realm of education, Dr. Keating broadens the definition beyond formal schooling. "Education to me means any type of learning," she asserts, acknowledging the importance of everyday learning experiences. Her success in academics is attributed to supportive professors and teachers who recognized her struggles and helped guide her back on the path to success.

As she reflects on her foster care journey, she identifies comfort in activities like color guard, choir, and writing. These outlets served as emotional lifelines, helping her navigate the turbulent waters of her youth.

Now, as a beacon of strength, she shares advice with those currently in foster care, emphasizing self-worth and resilience.

"The negative things people say about you and to you are not true. You're enough. You're smart. You're fearless. You're strong. You have so much to offer."

Looking towards the future, she envisions herself contributing to foster youth communities, providing the support and understanding she wishes she had received during her emancipation and aging out of the system. Her determination to make a positive impact is evident, showcasing the indomitable spirit that defines her story.
